December 2, 2011 – e-shelter has reached another milestone in its expansion strategy and in terms of moving forward with the construction of new data centers. Despite the current challenging environment in the financial markets, e-shelter has managed to both attract an investor and to secure long-term funding for the development of new data centers. The company has already successfully developed over 80,000 square meters of high-availability data-center space over the past ten years. e-shelter opened its first data center in Switzerland – in Rümlang near Zurich – in June 2011, and work on a further e-shelter data center in the Rhine-Main region is now beginning in Rüsselsheim near Frankfurt. A total of 17,600 square meters of data-center space will be completed in four construction phases on the 39,000 square-meter site; the first building is scheduled for completion in November 2012.
In its new investor, the Boston-based private equity company ABRY Partners LLC, e-shelter has acquired a business partner that will further its growth strategy. ABRY Partners has recorded a transaction volume of over $27 billion and invested in over 450 companies since it was founded in 1989. Its focus on the fields of media, telecommunications and information services has provided ABRY Partners with valuable experience and knowledge of the industry that will help e-shelter to continue growing. ABRY Partners has already made transactions and investments worth over $1.5 billion in the field of data-center services.
“We are delighted at the involvement of ABRY Partners and are convinced that ABRY will be a valuable partner in e-shelter’s further expansion,” said Rupprecht Rittweger, the founder and Managing Director of e-shelter. “This investment will allow us to move forward quickly with the development of new sites. In addition to our new facility in Rüsselsheim, which will meet the latest technological standards in terms of cooling and energy efficiency, we are also planning further centers in Berlin and Munich.”
e-shelter plans, builds and operates high-availability data centers whose infrastructure provides the highest level of physical security and operational reliability. At its main site in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, e-shelter has created a 60,000 square-meter campus for high-availability environments – Europe’s largest single data-center site. e-shelter was founded in 2000 and also has locations in Berlin, Munich, Hamburg and Zurich. The company is currently developing further centers in London, Berlin and Frankfurt. Its customers include financial-services and telecommunications companies as well as IT service providers.
