Cygnus Business Media Makes Significant Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Acquisition

Leading B2B media company establishes greater reach in EMS and First Responder portfolio

Westport, CT (July 5, 2005) – Cygnus Business Media, a leading diversified business-to-business media company, which currently owns the fire service market’s top trade shows, magazine and website, announced today it has acquired EMS magazine, EMS Expo, Advanced Rescue Technology and Frontline First Responder magazines and their accompanying websites from California-based Summer Communications and Expo Productions.

“This important acquisition complements our existing Firehouse brand portfolio, and offers additional synergies within our Law Enforcement Group,” says Cygnus Business Media President & CEO Paul Mackler. “It will allow us to gain more reach in the EMS segment for our advertisers within the EMS and first responder industry.”

EMS Expo, the nation’s number one emergency medical services trade show and conference, is supported by several organizations including the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT) which collocates its annual conference with EMS EXPO. It will be produced by Cygnus Expositions, the tradeshow division of Cygnus Business Media which successfully produces the Firehouse Expo and Firehouse World expositions, the largest annual east and west coast fire rescue events in the country. Together these trade events showcase over 200,000 net square feet of fire and rescue products and attract more than 20,000 fire, rescue and EMS professionals annually.

“EMS Expo is the largest show of its kind reaching emergency service professionals,” says Cygnus Expositions President Jeff Price. “It is the biggest event in the industry by far, spanning over 90,000 net square feet of exhibit space. The show brings the world of EMS to industry professionals from around the country. Carol Summer and her team have done a great job building the show and comprehensive educational conference to where it is today. With the additional resources and synergies that Cygnus brings to the table, this show will grow even further in importance to the industry.”

Cygnus’ Firehouse media products already reach more fire and emergency service professionals than any other media company. Over 600,000 unique visitors log onto Firehouse.com monthly; another 86,000 fire commissioners, chiefs and firefighters subscribe to Firehouse Magazine; and more than 20,000 fire professionals attend Firehouse Expo (July 26-31 2005 at the Baltimore Convention Center), and Firehouse World (February 19-23, 2006 at the San Diego Convention Center).

“EMS magazine is an extremely strong and well respected publication that will become an important addition to our publishing portfolio,” says Cygnus Publishing President Rich Reiff. “Advanced Rescue Technology and Frontline First Responder magazines also present many opportunities to increase our footprint in the fire and emergency service market. The ability to consistently deliver vital information to nearly every member of the emergency service industry is crucial and will remain so in the coming years,.”

Cygnus’ Law Enforcement Technology and Law Enforcement Product News serve 60,000 members of the law enforcement community monthly. Officer.com has increased its access to public safety professionals threefold since being acquired by Cygnus, and currently reaches nearly 400,000 unique visitors monthly. And Cygnus recently announced the launch of Enforcement Expo, a trade show and conference for law enforcement professionals (September 8-10, 2005 at the I-X Center, Cleveland, Ohio).

“EMS Magazine, EMS Expo, Advanced Rescue Technology and Frontline First Responder have proved valuable to our customers and the industry since we first began producing them,” says Summer Communications Founder, Publisher and Executive Editor Carol Summer. “Having Cygnus acquire them and incorporate them into an already established portfolio of emergency service and fire rescue media products is very fortunate. The properties will continue to flourish with a large media company supporting them.”

With this acquisition, Cygnus Business Media's Fire Rescue & EMS print market segment will reach over 200,000 subscribers who are firefighters, emergency service professionals, independent EMS/Rescue Response departments, private EMS/Rescue Response Units, and disaster preparedness agencies. Firehouse Magazine already possesses the highest pass-along readership in the fire service industry with more than 500,000 readers monthly and is the strongest buy for advertisers who want to reach fire rescue purchasing influentials. Advanced Rescue Technology and Frontline First Responder magazines each reach 43,000 emergency service professionals. Firehouse.com boasts over 150 million impressions of sponsor advertisements, messages and products every month. In 2002, Firehouse.com acquired the Fire-EMS Information Network, creating the web's largest directory of emergency services sites.

EMS magazine, EMS Expo, Advanced Rescue Technology and Frontline First Responder employees will remain in California.
