Commission issues a Notice of Inquiry into television ownership restrictions

WASHINGTON, DC – September 12, 2002 – The FCC has issued a Notice of Inquiry into virtually all of its television ownership restrictions. This is the first step in a likely deregulatory round.

The FCC has set an ambitious goal of promulgating new rules in the spring of 2003. The proposed new rules would allow broader use of "double-ups" of television stations within individual markets, ownership of local TV stations by local newspapers, ownership of local TV stations by local cable systems, and an increase in the total number of stations owned nationwide by the largest owner/operators.
